Audition requirements for string instruments

Cello

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6)

  • One major or minor scale spanning 2 octaves with its corresponding arpeggio;
  • A study by Feuillard, Lee, Dotzauer, Schroeder, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces in first position (1st to 4th position).

Preparatory school (secondary school)

  • One major or minor scale spanning 3 octaves with its corresponding arpeggio;
  • A study by Dotzauer, Schroeder (vol. I or II), Duport, or equivalent;
  • One movement of a Bach Suite;
  • Two contrasting pieces, one of which should be a movement from a sonata or a concerto.

NOTE: students in secondary 4 and 5 should demonstrate their ability in thumb position beyond 7th position.

CEGEP

  • One major or minor scale spanning 4 octaves with its corresponding arpeggio;
  • One scale in double-stops;
  • A study by Duport, Popper, Schroeder (vol. III), Franchomme, or equivalent;
  • One movement of a Bach Suite;
  • Two contrasting pieces, one of which should be a movement from a sonata or a concerto.

Undergraduate and graduate studies

  • A study by Popper, Grützmacher, Piatti, or Caprice by Servais;
  • One movement of a Bach Suite (II to VI);
  • One movement from a concerto;
  • A contrasting piece.

Double bass

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6 or secondary 1, 2, or 3)

  • Technical and auditory aptitude;
  • Basic knowledge of music.

Preparatory school (secondary 3, 4, or 5)

  • Scales and arpeggios spanning 1 octave;
  • A study from the Nanny Complete Method, part 1, or equivalent in Simandl or Billé; thumb position not required;
  • Two movements of a sonata or concerto by Marcello, or equivalent;
  • A piece for double bass and piano.

CEGEP

  • Scales and arpeggios spanning 2 octaves;
  • A study by Simandl (Method 2, first section, studies 1-10);
  • Two contrasting sonata movements by Marcello, or equivalent;
  • A piece for double bass and piano.

Undergraduate studies

  • Scales and arpeggios spanning 2 and 3 octaves;
  • A study by Simandl (Method 2, second section, studies 1-9);
  • A piece for double bass and piano;
  • One movement of the Capuzzi concerto, or equivalent.

Graduate studies

  • Scales and arpeggios spanning 2 and 3 octaves;
  • Two contrasting studies by Simandl, Nanny, Billé, Bottesini, or equivalent;
  • One complete sonata of the applicant’s choice;
  • One piece for double bass and piano;
  • One movement of a concerto. The applicant may choose from the following: Bottesini Concerto n 2 in B minor, Dittersdorf Concerto in E major, Dragonetti Concerto in A major, Koussevitzky Concerto in F minor, Vanhal Concerto in E major, Paganini Moses Fantasy, or equivalent.

Guitar

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6 or secondary 1)

  • One or two major or minor scales spanning 2 octaves;
  • An early study by Sor, Aguado, Carcassi, Brouwer, or Carulli;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice from the standard classical guitar repertoire such as volumes 1, 2, or 3 of Progressive Repertoire, Productions d’Oz, or an equivalent piece from a classical guitar method like Shearer, Dubuc, Lebœuf, etc.

Preparatory school (secondary 2, 3, or 4)

  • Two major or minor scales spanning 2 octaves;
  • A study by Sor, Carcassi, Aguado, Giuliani, Brouwer (no. 6 or higher), or Villa-Lobos;
  • One piece of appropriate difficulty.

Preparatory school (secondary 5)

  • One or two major or minor (harmonic and melodic) scales spanning 2 octaves;
  • A study by Sor (op. 60) or by Brouwer, Études simples, n 1 to 5;
  • One piece from the classical guitar repertoire such as volumes 5 or 6 of Progressive Repertoire, Productions d’Oz;
  • A selection of contrasting studies or pieces from different musical periods totalling 15 minutes of music. For example, the applicant could play pieces by Carulli or Carcassi as well as a more modern study or work.

CEGEP

  • Two major and minor (either harmonic or melodic) scales spanning 2 octaves;
  • A study by Sor (op. 6 or op. 35), Carcassi (op. 60), Brouwer (Études simples, n6 to 10) or Aguado, Giuliani, Villa-Lobos, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces from Progressive Repertoire volume 5 or 6 (Productions d’Oz), such as Tarrega (preludes or mazurkas) and one piece by Bach;
  • A selection of contrasting studies or pieces from different musical periods totalling 15 minutes of music. For example, the applicant could play a study from the Classical period, one movement of a Baroque suite, and a modern piece.

Undergraduate studies

  • Two or three major and melodic minor scales spanning 2 or 3 octaves;
  • One study by Sor (op. 29) or Villa-Lobos (12 Etudes);
  • A selection of contrasting studies or pieces from different musical periods totalling 20 minutes of music. For example, the applicant could play a Baroque work by Bach or by Weiss, as well as a piece from the Romantic or Modern periods.

Graduate studies

  • Three or four major and melodic minor scales spanning 3 octaves;
  • Four contrasting pieces from varying musical periods totalling 20 minutes of music. For example, the applicant could play one piece by Villa-Lobos, one by Sor, Bach’s Prelude and fugue, two movements of a suite for lute by Weiss, Variations by Giuliani, and one piece from the Romantic or Modern periods.

Harp

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6 or secondary 1, 2, or 3)

  • Major and minor arpeggios in all keys with 3 fingers, alternating hands spanning 4 octaves; and dominant 7th and diminished 7th arpeggios with 4 fingers in all keys, alternating hands spanning 4 octaves;
  • A study by Grossi (Method for Harp with Pozzoli addition Grade I, nos. 1 to 14), or equivalent;
  • One of the following pieces: J.S. Bach Junior Bach Collection (transcr. P. Chertok), Marcel Grandjany Bagatelles or Trois pièces faciles, Mildred Dilling Old Tunes for New Harpists, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 4)

  • Major and harmonic minor scales in all keys, hands together in octaves spanning 3 octaves; melodic minor scales in sixths and tenths; major and minor arpeggios in all keys with 3 and 4 fingers, hands alternating and together spanning 4 and 5 octaves; dominant 7th and diminished 7th arpeggios in all keys with 4 fingers, hands together and alternating spanning 4 octaves;
  • A study from Grossi Method for Harp (with Pozzoli addition) Grade I, no. 15 to 20 and Grade II, no. 1 to 45, or from Pozzoli, Studies of Medium Difficulty, or equivalent.
  • One of the following pieces: Mildred Dilling 30 Little Classics; Marcel Grandjany Pastorale, Petite suite classique, Noël provençal, Automne, Le bon petit Roy d’Yvetôt, or Old Chinese Song; Henriette Renié’s Feuillets d’album; G. Kirchoff’s Aria and Rigaudon; or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 5)

  • Major and harmonic minor scales in all keys, hands together in octaves spanning 3 octaves; melodic minor scales in sixths and tenths; major and minor arpeggios in all keys with 3 and 4 fingers, hands alternating and together spanning 4 and 5 octaves; dominant 7th and diminished 7th arpeggios with 4 fingers in all keys, hands together and alternating spanning 4 octaves;
  • A study from Pozzoli Studies of Medium Difficulty, or equivalent.
  • One of the following pieces: Marcel Grandjany Petite suite classique, Automne, Le bon petit Roy d’Yvetôt, or Old Chinese Song; or G. Kirchhoff Aria and Rigaudon (transcr. M. Grandjany), or equivalent.

CEGEP (first year)

  • Glissandi in all keys: on a major chord with added sixth, on a dominant 9th chord, and on a diminished 7th chord;
  • Studies: Seven Progressive Sonatas by Naderman, or equivalent;
  • Repertoire: J.S. Bach Largo (transcr. M. Grandjany), G.F. Haendel Sarabande (transcr. M. Grandjany), Claude Debussy La fille aux cheveux de lin, Marcel Grandjany Aria in a Classic Style, or equivalent.

CEGEP (second year)

  • Major and harmonic minor scales in all keys, hands together in octaves spanning 3 octaves; melodic minor scales in sixths and tenths; major and minor arpeggios with 3 and 4 fingers in all keys, hands alternating spanning 4 and 5 octaves; dominant 7th and diminished 7th arpeggios with 4 fingers in all keys, hands alternating spanning 5 octaves; Major and harmonic minor scales in all keys, hands together in octaves spanning 3 octaves (in a faster tempo);
  • A study from Bochsa 50 Études Op. 60 (book 2, ed. Alphonse Leduc), or equivalent;
  • One of the following pieces: A. Périlhou Chanson de Guillot Martin (transcr. Grandjany), G. Pescetti Allegretto, Marcel Tournier Au matin, Nino Rota Sarabanda e Toccata, David Watkins Petite suite, or equivalent.

Undergraduate studies

  • Major and harmonic minor scales in all keys, hands together in octaves spanning 3 octaves; melodic minor scales in sixths and tenths; major and minor arpeggios in all keys, hands together spanning 4 octaves in sixths; dominant 7th and diminished 7th arpeggios with 4 fingers in all keys, hands together spanning 4 octaves; major and minor arpeggios with 3 and 4 fingers in all keys, hands alternating spanning 5 octaves; major and harmonic minor scales in all keys, hands together in octaves spanning 3 octaves (faster tempo);
  • One study from Bochsa 50 Études book 2, Dizi 48 Études book 1 and 2, or from Éric Schmidt Six études, or equivalent;
  • Repertoire: G.F. Handel Concerto in B-flat, Jean-Michel Damase Concertino, Marcel Tournier Féerie, Claude Debussy Clair de lune, or equivalent.

Graduate studies

Repertoire: W.A. Mozart Concerto for flute and harp, Claude Debussy Danse sacrée and Danse profane, Maurice Ravel Introduction et Allegro, Paul Hindemith Sonata, or equivalent.

Viola

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6)

  • Major or minor scales and arpeggios in first position;
  • An etude by Wohlfahrt op. 45, Kayser op. 20, Hoffmann op. 86, or equivalent;
  • One movement of a sonata or concerto by Benedetto Marcello, Seitz, Sitt, Vivaldi, Telemann, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary school)

  • Major or minor scales and arpeggios spanning 2 octaves;
  • A study by Kayser op. 20 or op. 36, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces or movements, including a movement from a sonata or concerto by Telemann, or equivalent.

CEGEP (first year)

  • Major or minor scales and arpeggios;
  • A study by Dont, Rodolphe Kreutzer, Mazas, Bruni, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces or movements, including a movement of the Handel concerto, or equivalent.

CEGEP (second year), undergraduate and graduate studies

  • One piece or a movement of a piece by Bach for solo violin or cello or one movement of a concerto or sonata;
  • A study by Fiorillo, Campagnoli, Lillian Fuchs, or equivalent;
  • Applicant’s choice of concerto from the standard repertoire.

Violin

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6)

  • Major or minor scales and arpeggios spanning 2 octaves, with varied bowings;
  • A study by Wohlfahrt, Laoureux, Sitt, Kayser, or equivalent;
  • One movement of a concerto such as Seitz, Rieding, Vivaldi, or one movement of a Baroque sonata such as Telemann, Vivaldi, Corelli, or equivalent;
  • One contrasting piece such as Carl Böhm Mouvements Perpétuels from Suite n 3, Introduction et Polonaise, Dancla Airs variés op. 86-89, Fiocco Allegro, Severn Danse Polonaise, or equivalent;

Preparatory school (secondary 1, 2, or 3)

  • Major or minor scales and arpeggios spanning 3 octaves, with varied bowings;
  • A study by Kayser, Dont (op. 37), Mazas (op. 36, volume 1), or equivalent;
  • The first or last movement of a concerto by Accolay, Bach (in A minor), de Bériot (n 9), Haydn (no. 2), Rode (no. 7), Viotti (no. 23), or equivalent;
  • One contrasting piece such as Dancla Airs variés118, de Bériot Scène de Ballet, Kreisler Tempo di Minuetto, Sicilienne et Rigaudon, Franz Ries Mouvement Perpétuel, op. 34, a Handel sonata, or equivalent;

Preparatory school (secondary 4 or 5)

  • Major or minor scales and arpeggios spanning 3 octaves, with varied bowings;
  • A study by Dont (op. 37), Fiorillo, Rode, Mazas (op. 36, volume 2), or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces such as:
  • A movement of one of the following concertos: de Bériot n 7, Bach E major, Bruch no. 1, Haydn C major, Kabalevsky op. 48, Lalo Symphonie Espagnole 1st mov., Rode, Spohr, Mozart no. 3, or equivalent;
  • A character piece such as Bartok Danses roumaines, Beethoven Romances n 1 or 2, Kreisler Praeludium and Allegro, Variations on a theme by Corelli, Mozart Rondo, Sinding Suite in A minor, or equivalent.

CEGEP, undergraduate studies and graduate studies

  • Studies: Gaviniès, Dont (op. 35), Locatelli, Wieniawsky, Paganini, or equivalent;
  • One movement of a sonata or partita for solo violin by J.S. Bach;
  • The first or last movement of a concerto from the standard repertoire such as Bruch n 1 or 2, Dvorak, Khachaturian, Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, Mozart no. 4 or 5, Saint-Saëns no. 3, Sibelius, Tchaïkovsky, or equivalent;
  • One contrasting piece of the applicant’s choice such as Saint-Saëns Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, Havanaise, Sarasate Zigeunerweisen, Introduction and Tarantella, Romance Andalouse, Suk 4 Pieces, op. 17, Henri Wieniawski Scherzo-Tarentelle, Polonaises n 1 and 2, or equivalent.
